PHĪME

Planetary Health Institute for Metabolic Ecology

The first system connecting soil, food, and human health.

The structural gap

No institution on Earth connects soil and human health.

Healthcare treats symptoms. Agriculture damages the source. No system bridges the two. PHĪME is that missing system — built from the ground up in Farm8, Aya Nagar.

complexity science recognizes what reductionism cannot —

01

Soil is not dirt.

  • It is the oldest living intelligence on Earth.
  • 38 trillion microbial organisms in the human gut predate the first clinic by 3.7 billion years.
  • Why we say this

Sender, Fuchs & Milo (2016, PLOS Biology 14: e1002533) revised the standard estimate of bacterial cells in the body to ~3.8 × 10¹³ — roughly matching the count of human cells (~3 × 10¹³). The colon alone holds the vast majority.

Schopf (1993, Science 260: 640) placed the earliest fossil evidence of microbial life in 3.5 billion-year-old Australian stromatolites. The 3.7-billion mark is the contemporary consensus floor for biological life on Earth.

The point is not the precision but the order of magnitude: we evolved in continuous metabolic conversation with these communities long before medicine existed.

02

Health is ecological.

  • Before it is medical.
  • No reductionist model can account for the full causal chain between soil management and metabolic outcomes.
03

PHĪME refuses the boundary.

  • It builds infrastructure to observe what cannot be controlled.

Complexity Science framing

Health as emergent ecology, not mechanical outcome.

Health is emergent.

It cannot be reduced to any single component. Health arises from the interactions between systems — soil, food, gut, social ecology — in ways that no reductionist model can predict. PHĪME measures interactions, not components.

Small changes, threshold effects.

A 5% improvement in soil biodiversity does not linearly produce a 5% improvement in nutritional density. The relationship is non-linear, threshold-dependent, time-delayed. PHĪME's longitudinal data infrastructure exists precisely because linear models fail here.

The body organises itself.

When given the right ecological conditions — diverse, living food from living soil — the human metabolic system self-organises toward health. The intervention is not chemical. It is ecological. PHĪME is the infrastructure to prove this.

Cardiac Interiality · three Points-Chauds

Soil · Gut · Hearth

The chain is not a line. It is the cardiac interiality — three Points-Chauds breathing in concert at the centre of the heart. Scroll to walk each in turn.interior · arterial · inter-reality

One of three · Soil

The chain begins in living ground.

Farm8 — 3 acres of regenerative cultivation in Aya Nagar, New Delhi — is the institutional ground where this chain becomes measurable. Continuously instrumented: soil organic carbon, microbial diversity, mycorrhizal density, what the plants carry into the food.

A healthy teaspoon of soil holds tens of thousands of microbial species. Industrial soils collapse this to dozens. The first link in the chain breaks before food is even grown.

Why we say this

Fierer (2017, Nature Reviews Microbiology 15: 579) and Bardgett & van der Putten (2014, Nature 515: 505) document the order-of-magnitude consensus on soil microbial diversity. Wagg et al. (2014, PNAS 111: 5266) showed soil-community composition determines ecosystem multifunctionality. Walk the soil link →

Two of three · Gut

The chain ends in living bodies.

The human gut hosts roughly 38 trillion microbial cells, holding ~150× more genes than the human genome itself. This community — fed by what the plate provides — is the load-bearing variable for metabolic health.

India sits at the leading edge of the global metabolic transition. Type 2 diabetes prevalence has risen five-fold over thirty years (Anjana et al. 2023, ICMR-INDIAB national study, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology 11: 474). 11% of adults with diabetes; 15% prediabetes; the curve is steepest here.

Why we say this

Qin et al. (2010, Nature 464: 59) established the gut-microbiome gene catalogue. Sonnenburg & Sonnenburg (2014, Cell Metabolism 20: 779) named the diet → microbiome → metabolic-signalling mechanism. Walk the gut link →

Three of three · Hearth

The chain is held in the cardiac interiality.

PHĪME is not a research paper, a policy framework, or a campaign. It is an operating institution that does the work — farm, clinic, data infrastructure, longitudinal cohort — and lets evidence accumulate as practice.

The chain holds because the institution holds both ends — soil and body — at the same fire. The clinic measures; the farm grows; the kitchen remembers; the data instruments the whole.

of people are metabolically unhealthy. The system cannot fix what it created.

Why we say this

Araújo, Cai & Stevens (2019, Metabolic Syndrome & Related Disorders 17: 46) applied a strict five-marker definition to US NHANES data and found only 12.2% of adults metabolically healthy — the inverse (~88%) is the widely-cited "metabolically unhealthy" figure. The 40%+ figure used here is the more conservative cut (insulin-resistance + at least one comorbidity).

For India specifically, Anjana et al. (2023, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology 11: 474) — the ICMR-INDIAB national cross-sectional study — found roughly 11% of adults with diabetes, 15% prediabetes, with rising trajectory across all 31 states surveyed.

The moment is now

Rising fast

Metabolic disease is the largest growing non-communicable burden globally.

Breaking down

Industrial food systems produce nutrition-depleted crops by design — not by accident.

The system does not exist yet. That is the opportunity.

Soil microbiome — living network

This is what we are trying to restore.

A living network of organisms in permanent, dynamic conversation. Every node is a species. Every line is a metabolic relationship. Industrial agriculture collapses this network to near silence. Farm8 rebuilds it.

"Change does not fail because it is wrong. It fails because it is met poorly."

Most disease begins in how we grow food.

We are building the system that proves it — and fixes it.

Why we say this

This is the unifying claim of PHĪME's evidence chain — five linked propositions, each presupposing the one before, each backed by mechanism literature.

The strongest contemporary synthesis: Whitmee et al. (2015, The Lancet 386: 1973) — the Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health — establishes that human health and ecosystem health cannot be analytically separated. Tilg, Zmora, Adolph & Elinav (2020, Nature Reviews Immunology 20: 40) traces the mechanistic chain from diet-induced microbial shifts to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and the metabolic-syndrome cluster.

The Reclining Dragon Wakes

Long before the institution had a name, the currents were already converging. They came from six civilisations and three millennia, walking toward the same threshold without knowing one another, the way distant rivers find a single delta. The dragon at the centre of the field was reclining — Wolong, sleeping not from exhaustion but from patience — and what looked like stillness was the long arithmetic of the right hour.

This is not a story of founding. It is a story of converging — of currents that had always been flowing and that, at a particular bend in the world, recognised one another.

The bend has a name now. Its name is PHĪME.

◆ ◆ ◆
Movement I

The Ancestral Field

In one current: a Vedic seer named Bhṛgu standing before his father Varuṇa, asking what Brahman is, and being told to find out by feeding the question back through itself. Five answers and one terrible reversal: I am food, and I eat the eater of food. Three thousand years before the word metabolic meant anything, the substrate was already laid: that what is metabolised metabolises in return; that the host is also the meal; that there is no clean outside to the eating.

In another current: a tradition of Aghoris at the cremation grounds of Banaras, walking the path of non-feara-ghora — using the materials that respectable practice would not touch. Vimalananda transmitted this to Robert Svoboda and Svoboda wrote it down in three books, and now the lineage has a paper trail in English. The dharmic equivalent of the Bokor. The Indian sister of the Butoh dancer at the cremation pit.

In a third: Zhuge Liang in his thatched hut, refusing to be sought once, refusing twice, accepting on the third visit — and then implementing Tuntian, the military-agricultural cultivation that fed armies without breaking peasants. The Reclining Dragon's economic genius was that he refused the false choice between sword and plough.

In a fourth: a Japanese dancer named Hijikata at midcentury inventing Ankoku Butoh — the dance of utter darkness — by asking what the body would do if it remembered it descended from the dead. Ohno carried it forward. Sena Voncujovi the Bokor carried the West African strand in parallel. Yoruba diaspora carried the Lucumi strand. The dance the body does when it knows it is haunted.

These were not the same tradition. They were the same question, asked by different hands.
